What are the Early Signs of Prostate Cancer?

Early prostate cancer usually doesn't cause any symptoms, but there are some signs that may indicate something is wrong with the prostate. Blood in the urine or semen, weak urine flow, unexplained pain around the prostate while sitting, swelling in the lower body, back, hip or bone pain, abnormal bowel or urinary habits, and unexplained weight loss are all possible early signs of prostate cancer. The American Cancer Society (ACS) recommends screening for prostate cancer at certain ages. Men who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer by their father or brother have a significantly higher risk of developing the disease.

Other risk factors include age, race, and family history. The urethra runs through half of the prostate and if the cancer grows near it, it can put pressure on it and change the way you urinate. If you notice changes in your urination, it is more likely a sign of an enlarged prostate or another health problem. Prostate cancer is usually more easily treated when detected at an early stage.

It is important to be aware of the early signs and to get tested if you are at risk. Your multidisciplinary team will work with you to develop a personalized plan for treating prostate cancer in a way that fits your individual needs and goals.
